Business measurement has an awkward property: the answer depends on who is asking. Prices, ad creatives, rankings, catalogues and availability are assembled per visitor, so there is no neutral copy of the page sitting somewhere to be fetched. What you collect is only as accurate as the identity you collected it with.

  • Pick the market before the plan — The exit country is the one setting that cannot be corrected afterwards. Data gathered from the wrong market is not slightly wrong, it is about a different question.
  • Decide whether the identity should hold still — Measurement wants a stable identity so results stay comparable between runs. Broad collection wants rotation so no single address carries the whole load. Most business programmes need both, on separate proxies.
  • Set cadence from the target, not the deadline — Request rate per host is what triggers defences, far more than how many addresses you own. A modest pool used patiently outlasts a large one used all at once.
  • Record what you collected with — Store the exit IP, carrier and timestamp beside every capture. Without them a screenshot is an assertion, and a price series cannot be defended when somebody disputes it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why not just use a datacenter proxy for business data collection?

For anything measured by an ad platform, datacenter ranges are excluded from impression counting under IAB and MRC rules, so the creative you are trying to verify may never serve at all. For anything priced or ranked per visitor, a hosting IP is a strong signal that the visitor is not a customer, and the usual response is a different page rather than an error — which is worse, because the data looks fine. Where neither applies, a datacenter proxy is cheaper and a perfectly sensible choice.

Do I need a mobile IP, or is residential enough?

Residential is enough for a great deal of business collection and costs less. Mobile earns its premium in three situations: when the campaign or offer is targeted by carrier, when you need the mobile version of a page rather than a narrow desktop window, and when the target has already learned to distrust the residential pools in that market. Carrier CGNAT also means one exit IP sits behind thousands of real handsets, so blocking it is expensive for the target.

How many IPs does a monitoring programme need?

Fewer than most people assume, and it is the wrong first question. Request rate per host matters more than pool size: a small pool used at a human cadence outlasts a large one hammered in parallel. Size the pool from the number of distinct markets and devices you must reproduce, then set cadence from what the target tolerates, and add IPs only when the cadence is already correct.

Is collecting competitor and market data legal?

Collecting information that is published publicly is routine commercial practice and PXM2 customers do it every day. What varies is the contract you accepted with a given site, the personal data involved, and the rules of your sector and jurisdiction — none of which a proxy changes either way. Treat access to accounts, paywalled material and personal data as questions for your own legal advice rather than a technical setting.

Can one proxy serve several of these use cases at once?

Yes, and most customers start that way. A single dedicated modem handles ad verification, rank checks and price monitoring for one market comfortably, because each job is small in request terms. Split them onto separate proxies when a job needs its own rotation behaviour — rank tracking wants a stable identity per measurement, while broad crawling wants frequent rotation — or when one job going wrong must not interrupt the other.
